Lighthorse Design created a unique steel sculpture in our welding studio using rod, hammered steel and steel mesh. Effort was made to capture the horse head form and proportions

At Lighthorse Design, our expert 3D technicians translated and manipulated the digital file created by 3D scanning the original horse head sculpture. Several different versions were printed in resin.

Our casting foundry at Lighthorse Design utilized the resin copies to create molds that are an intrinsic element used in the ancient technique of lost wax casting. Wax heads are cast when the resin is melted out leaving a cavity, impression. These are examples of wax heads that were poured into the molds.

The wax heads are put into a cylinder that is loaded with plaster. The wax is melted out very slowly by turning the cylinder upside down and applying heat to create a negatvie space in the plaster. The negative empty cavity is loaded with molten bronze or stainless steel poured into the cavity when the cylinder is turned right side up. It is a tedious and time consuming process. The melting temperature of bronze is 1742-1922 degrees Fahrenheit. Steel melts at 2550-2790 F. When the metal cools completely it can be cleaned of residual plaster and ready for patina and polishing.

At Lighthorse Design, expert finishers apply patinas to the bronze.

Our boutique craftsman allow you to choose a patina that suits your wildest dreams. There is a huge selection of patinas and an almost limitless range of sizes with standard sizes more readily available. A light source can be provided for your project.
